Zircon

Zircon is a natural gem, not cubic zirconia. It is zirconium silicate, with more fire than almost any natural gem except diamond and demantoid, and it is the oldest mineral on earth: grains from Australia are about 4.4 billion years old. Most blue zircon is natural brown zircon heated in Cambodia. On Amazon, nearly everything called "zircon" in jewellery is actually cubic zirconia, so real zircon is easy to miss.

Fine Cambodian blue zircon costs roughly $50 to $150 a carat. A "94 ct certified natural zircon" for $35 is not one. Read the title: real zircon listings say natural and name the origin.

Treatments. Almost all blue and colourless zircon is heated brown zircon. A few heated stones can fade back slightly over time in strong light. Some zircon contains traces of uranium and is very slightly radioactive, far below any level of concern in jewellery. All gem treatments explained.

  • Zircon: Ratanakiri, Cambodia. The source of most blue zircon, made blue by heating brown crystals.
  • Zircon: Ratnapura and gem gravels, Sri Lanka. Zircon in many colours from the island’s gem gravels.
  • Zircon: Jack Hills, Western Australia, Australia. Tiny zircon grains here are about 4.4 billion years old, the oldest pieces of the earth ever found.
  • Zircon: Tunduru and Umba, Tanzania. Red, orange and yellow zircon from gem gravels.

How it is cut

Lab zircon is mostly machine-cut in calibrated sizes, which is why a cut lab stone costs little more than its rough. Fine mined stones are often native-cut to keep weight, then recut by precision cutters. See cuts from easiest to hardest and whether cutting your own is cheaper than buying cut.

Your kit for zircon

Five tools that let you check what you bought (a loupe, a UV torch, locking tweezers, a gem box and a pocket scale), plus a turntable that spins your stone under the light the way jewellers show one. The full collector's kit.

In short

Zircon grows over millions of years in the earth, or in hours to months in a lab. Both are real zircon; the mined stone is rare and priced for rarity, the lab stone is priced for the cost of growing it. Buy lab to wear and enjoy, check the listing names the mineral, and test it when it arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is zircon the same as cubic zirconia?

No. Zircon is a natural gem, zirconium silicate. Cubic zirconia is a man-made crystal of zirconium oxide. On Amazon, most jewellery titled "zircon" is cubic zirconia.

Is blue zircon natural?

The zircon is natural; the blue almost always comes from heating brown zircon, mostly from Ratanakiri in Cambodia. This is standard and accepted.

Why is zircon the oldest mineral?

Zircon is so tough that grains survive for billions of years, and the uranium inside lets scientists date them. Grains from the Jack Hills in Australia are about 4.4 billion years old.

Is zircon a birthstone?

Yes, blue zircon is a December birthstone, alongside tanzanite and turquoise.
