Jewelry metals: sterling, gold plated, vermeil, gold filled, solid gold and more
Updated October 16, 2026
Sterling silver is at least 92.5% silver all the way through. Gold plated is a thin skin of gold, at least 0.175 microns under US rules, usually over brass, and it wears off. Vermeil is gold at least 2.5 microns thick over sterling silver. Gold filled is a much thicker layer of gold bonded on, at least 1/20 of the weight. Solid gold is gold alloy throughout. For jewellery you wear every day, choose solid gold, sterling silver or stainless steel; save plated pieces for occasional wear.
Every label, one table
| Label | What it legally means | How long it lasts worn daily | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid gold (10K, 14K, 18K) | The whole piece is a gold alloy. 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.3%, 18K is 75%. | Lifetime | Highest |
| Sterling silver (925) | At least 925/1000 pure silver (FTC 16 CFR 23.5). Tarnishes, but polishes back. | Lifetime with care | Moderate |
| Platinum (950) | At least 950/1000 platinum. Heavy, naturally white, never needs re-plating. | Lifetime | Highest |
| Stainless steel (316L) | Steel alloy; does not tarnish, waterproof, very hard to scratch through. | Lifetime | Low |
| Titanium and tungsten carbide | Titanium: light and the most skin-friendly. Tungsten carbide: heavy and almost scratch-proof. Both are hard or impossible to resize. | Lifetime | Low |
| Gold filled | A layer of at least 10K gold bonded to a base metal, making up at least 1/20 of the metal’s weight (FTC 16 CFR 23.3). | Many years | Low to moderate |
| Vermeil | Sterling silver covered with at least 10K gold, at least 2.5 microns thick (FTC 16 CFR 23.4). | A few years of daily wear | Moderate |
| Gold plated / gold electroplate | At least 0.175 microns of 10K-or-better gold over another metal, often brass or copper (FTC 16 CFR 23.3). "Heavy gold electroplate" means at least 2.5 microns. | Months to a few years | Lowest |
| Gold-tone / gold flashed | No set gold content: a colour, or the thinnest wash of gold. Assume it is thinner than plating. | Months | Lowest |
Legal definitions from the US Federal Trade Commission's Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries (16 CFR 23.3 gold, 23.4 vermeil, 23.5 silver). Lifespans are typical ranges, not guarantees; plating thickness and how you wear it matter most.
Every metal, with real pieces
Each piece below was checked on Amazon on October 16, 2026: the listing's own Metal and Material details match the title, it is in stock, and it has at least 4 stars. Prices change, so the link goes to the live listing.
A trap we found while checking: one popular set of hoops is titled "925 Sterling Silver" while its own Material field says copper. Always scroll to the product details before you buy.
How to read an Amazon jewelry listing
- Look at "Metal type" under Product details, not just the title. A title can say "18K Gold" while the details say "Brass".
- "925", "S925" or "sterling" means solid sterling silver underneath, even if it is also plated with rhodium or gold on top.
- "Gold plated" with no base metal named is almost always brass or copper. We checked the plated tennis chains on our cubic zirconia page: nearly every one says brass in its details.
- "Solid gold over S925" on a listing means gold plating over sterling silver (vermeil-style), not solid gold.
- A karat number on a cheap piece describes the plating, not the piece. Solid 14K jewellery costs hundreds of dollars, not twenty.
- Sensitive skin: some plated pieces have a nickel layer under the gold. If nickel bothers you, look for "nickel-free", or buy sterling silver, stainless steel or solid gold.
Real examples from Amazon
- Sterling silver: Amazon Essentials CZ studs: sterling silver, about $15
- Gold plated brass: PAVOI CZ tennis bracelet: yellow gold plated brass, about $20
- Stainless steel: SDA CZ tennis chain: 316L stainless steel, about $48
- Vermeil: OAK & LUNA moissanite lock necklace: 18K gold vermeil, about $180
- Solid 14K gold: Amazon Essentials IGI lab diamond tennis bracelet: solid 14K yellow gold, about $465
Which to buy
- Wear it every day: solid gold, sterling silver or stainless steel. A sterling silver moissanite piece will outlast many plated ones; see how long cubic zirconia jewellery lasts.
- Want the gold look on a budget: vermeil or gold filled, not plain gold plated.
- Trying a style, or wearing it now and then: gold plated brass is fine, and the cheapest way in.
- Swimming, showering, the gym: stainless steel or solid gold. Chlorine and sweat wear plating fastest and tarnish silver.
Care in one paragraph
Take plated and vermeil pieces off before showering, swimming or exercising, and put them on after lotion and perfume. Wipe sterling silver with a silver polishing cloth when it darkens; it is surface tarnish, not damage. Do not use silver dip or abrasive polish on plated pieces, because it strips the plating. Store each piece in its own pouch so harder stones do not scratch softer metal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is gold vermeil real gold?
Yes, on the outside. Under the US FTC jewelry guides, vermeil means sterling silver covered with gold of at least 10 karat, at least 2.5 microns thick. That is real gold over real silver, and much thicker than ordinary gold plating, but it is not solid gold all the way through.
What does 925 mean on jewelry?
925 means sterling silver: at least 925 parts in 1,000 pure silver (92.5%). The rest is usually copper, which makes it harder. "S925" on an Amazon listing means the same thing.
Does gold plated jewelry turn your skin green?
It can, once the gold wears through. Gold plated jewelry is often brass or copper underneath, and copper reacts with sweat to leave a green mark. Sterling silver, stainless steel, vermeil and solid gold rarely do. Keeping plated pieces dry and taking them off to shower slows the wear.
Is 18K gold plated the same as 18K gold?
No. "18K gold plated" means a thin layer of 18 karat gold over another metal, usually brass. "18K gold" means the whole piece is 18 karat gold (75% gold). On Amazon, a jewelry listing priced like a pair of sunglasses is plated, whatever the karat in the title.
Which lasts longest for everyday wear?
Solid gold, then stainless steel and sterling silver, then gold filled, then vermeil, then gold plated. Plating over brass is the cheapest and wears through first, sometimes within months of daily wear.
