Gold-plated silver

Updated October 16, 2026

Silver spot price (the metal under the gold) loading… Live market price from gold-api.com. Each card values the silver core at this price; the gold layer is a few microns and adds only cents

Gold-plated silver is sterling silver with a layer of real gold on top. In the US, a seller may call it vermeil (say "ver-MAY") only if the gold is at least 10 karat and at least 2.5 microns thick, over sterling. It looks like solid gold for a fraction of the price, and because the core is a precious metal rather than brass, it is kinder to skin and still worth something when the gold wears thin.

Why it is a rising choice

Gold prices have climbed so far that a solid gold chain now costs thousands (see the live price on the gold page). Gold over sterling gives the same colour for tens of dollars, and a whole "demi-fine" category of jewellery has grown up around it. Unlike cheap gold plating, the metal under the gold is a precious metal, so the piece does not turn skin green the way brass does, suits most sensitive ears, and keeps value as silver.

Gold over silver, or gold over brass?

A listing that says "18K gold plated" and names no base metal is almost always gold over brass (see the brass page). Look for "925" or "sterling silver" under the gold. "Vermeil" promises the thicker 2.5-micron coat; "gold plated 925" promises the silver but not the thickness.

Making the gold last

Plating wears where it rubs: clasps, edges, the inside of rings. Take it off to shower, swim or put on perfume and lotion, and wipe it with a soft cloth. Never use a silver dip or a silver polishing cloth on it: they strip gold. When the silver starts to show, a jeweller can re-plate it.

How we picked these

Each piece is gold over sterling and passed the same review check as our silver: we read Amazon's summary of all its reviews for reports that it is not silver underneath, turns skin green, or has a clasp that fails, and kept only the pieces that came through clean. Reviews do say that on chains worn every day the gold thins after six months to a year, which is how plating ages.

The atoms inside

The gold is only a skin a few microns thick; everything under it is sterling silver, silver atoms with a little copper. A simplified picture: real electrons are fuzzy clouds, not dots on rings, but the count in each shell is real. The cube shows how the atoms stack in the solid metal.

Chains

Gold over solid sterling, the Italian chains that sell best. Most are plated, not vermeil: one reviewer measured the gold on a Miabella chain at about 1 micron, and on chains worn every day it thins to silver in a few months to a year and a half. The silver underneath is real. We dropped two gold-over-silver bracelets and a box chain whose reviews reported fast colour loss or a suspiciously light feel.

Earrings

Gold over sterling posts and hoops: the everyday pieces where gold over silver makes the most sense, because sensitive ears react to the nickel and brass in cheap plating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gold vermeil real gold?

Yes: a real layer of gold, at least 10 karat and 2.5 microns thick, over sterling silver. It is not solid gold, so it is priced like silver.

Does gold-plated silver tarnish or turn skin green?

The gold does not tarnish. When it wears thin, the silver underneath can darken like any silver, but it does not leave the green mark that gold-plated brass does.

How long does the gold last?

Earrings and pendants that do not rub can stay gold for years. Chains and rings worn every day usually thin at the edges in six months to two years. A jeweller can re-plate them.

Vermeil or gold filled?

Gold filled has a much thicker gold layer (at least 5% of the weight) bonded over brass, so it lasts longer but the core is not precious. Vermeil has a thinner layer over sterling silver.
