You can buy a 1 to 3 carat diamond on Amazon safely if you buy it the way a jeweller would: with a report from an independent laboratory (IGI or GIA), a number you look up yourself, solid gold or platinum you can see stamped, and an appraisal inside the return window. The four checks, in order
- Before you buy: the listing names the laboratory and gives the report number, and the report on the laboratory's own site matches the listing's shape, carat, colour, clarity and measurements.
- Before you buy: the carat weight is the centre stone's, not "ctw" (total weight), and the listing says lab-grown or natural.
- When it arrives: the metal is stamped 585 (14k), 750 (18k) or PT950 (platinum), and the report number still matches.
- Inside the return window: an independent appraiser, ideally a GIA Graduate Gemologist, confirms the stone matches the report and reads the girdle inscription.
