Copper
Updated October 16, 2026
Copper is a warm, reddish metal and one of the first metals people ever worked, more than 10,000 years ago. Pure copper jewellery is cheap and handsome, but it darkens and can leave a harmless green mark on skin, because sweat reacts with copper to make green copper salts. Copper is also inside most cheap "gold" jewellery: it is the main metal in brass and in the core of gold-filled pieces.

Why copper turns skin green
Sweat, lotion and skin acids react with copper to form copper salts, which are green. It is harmless and washes off with soap. A thin coat of clear nail varnish or jewellery lacquer on the inside of a copper ring or cuff stops it.
Patina: brown, then green
Bare copper darkens to brown in weeks, and outdoors it slowly turns green (verdigris), the colour of the Statue of Liberty. Many people like the dark look; to bring back the shine, rub with lemon juice and salt or a commercial copper cleaner, rinse and dry.
Copper in ancient Egypt
In ancient Egypt gold belonged to the pharaoh, the temples and the rich: it was the flesh of the gods. Most people could not afford it, so they wore cheaper materials instead: rings and bangles of copper and bronze, and beads of faience, a glazed quartz paste that gets its blue-green colour from copper. Copper was also the working metal of Egypt; the stone for the pyramids was cut with copper chisels and saws, helped by sand as an abrasive.
About the health claims
Copper and magnetic bracelets are often sold with health claims. A controlled trial of copper bracelets and magnetic wrist straps for rheumatoid arthritis found no effect beyond placebo, so we list them as jewellery only.
The copper atom
A simplified picture: real electrons are fuzzy clouds, not dots on rings, but the count in each shell is real. The cube shows how the atoms stack in the solid metal.
