Does moissanite tarnish or turn your finger green?

No. Moissanite does not tarnish and cannot turn your finger green: it is , a hard and chemically inert gem, not a metal. Darkening comes from the metal around it, and a green mark comes from copper in that metal, such as brass showing through worn gold plating, or sterling silver, which is alloyed with copper. Platinum, solid 14K or 18K gold, 316L stainless steel and titanium are the least likely to mark your skin.

Does moissanite itself tarnish?

No. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a compound of silicon and carbon, not a metal. A 1997 study in GIA’s journal Gems & Gemology gave its hardness as 9¼ on the scale, just below diamond at 10, and silicon carbide is highly inert chemically, partly because a thin layer of silica forms on its surface. Tarnish is something metals do: silver reacts with sulphur gases in the air to form a dark film of silver sulphide. The stone has nothing in it that reacts that way, so a darkened or green-stained piece is telling you about its metal, not its stone. A stone that looks dull or milky is usually coated in skin oil and soap; see does moissanite get cloudy.

Why did my moissanite ring turn my finger green?

Copper in the metal. A Nebraska Medicine dermatologist explains that the green comes from copper reacting with water, sweat, lotion and other products on your skin, and that the mark is harmless and washes off with soap and water. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, is widely used in fashion and costume jewellery, so a gold-plated brass ring can start marking once the plating wears through on the inside of the band. Sterling silver must be at least 92.5% silver to be sold as sterling under the US jewellery guides (16 CFR 23.5), and GIA notes that the rest is usually copper, so sterling can occasionally leave a faint green mark too, especially with sweat. A black or grey smudge is a different thing: fine particles of metal or tarnish rubbing off, sometimes helped by powders such as talc, and it is also harmless. The stone plays no part either way.

Which setting metals tarnish or turn skin green?

Setting metalDoes it tarnish? Can it mark skin green?Good to know
Platinum (PT950)NoVery unlikelyNaturally white, so it does not need plating to look white
Solid 18K goldVery rarelyVery rarely75% gold
Solid 10K or 14K yellow gold10K can darken; 14K only occasionallyRarely10K is 41.7% gold and 14K is 58.3%; the rest includes silver and copper
White goldNo, but its rhodium plating wearsRarelyRe-plating every few years keeps it bright white; some white gold contains nickel
Sterling silver (925)Yes: it darkens, eventually to blackSometimes a faint green markA silver polishing cloth removes light tarnish
Rhodium- or gold-plated sterling, including gold vermeilNot until the plating wearsRarelyThe silver underneath darkens once it shows
Gold-plated brass or copperThe base metal does, once the plating wearsYes: the usual causeCopper reacts with sweat; the mark washes off
316L stainless steelNoVery unlikelyIron-based chromium steel, not a copper alloy; a worn gold-colour coat shows grey steel, not green
TitaniumNoVery unlikelyHypoallergenic; implant grades such as Ti-6Al-4V contain no nickel

Will a moissanite chain or tennis necklace turn my neck green?

Only if the chain’s metal does. Many moissanite tennis necklaces and chains are sold as 925 sterling silver, often plated with rhodium or gold. While the plating is intact they rarely mark skin; once it wears at the clasp and on links that rub, the silver can darken and occasionally leave a faint mark, and sweat speeds this up. A chain listed only as “alloy” or brass under gold plating is the one most likely to turn your neck green. If your skin marks easily, choose solid gold, or take a sterling chain off for the shower, the gym and the pool. Our moissanite tennis necklace guide and jewellery metals guide go further.

How do you clean a moissanite ring?

Think of the stone and the metal separately. For the stone, Charles & Colvard, a moissanite jewellery maker, recommends mild soap and warm water, a gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush or cloth, a thorough rinse and a pat dry with a lint-free cloth. It also advises against harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners, so soap and water is the safe default at home. For the setting, buff lightly tarnished sterling with a silver polishing cloth. Keep silver dips and polishes away from gold-plated and vermeil pieces: the Canadian Conservation Institute warns that polishes damage gilding and that any tarnish removal can be very damaging to plated silver. Silver tarnishes faster in damp air, so store it dry in a closed bag or box; the Canadian Conservation Institute suggests keeping silver below 50% relative humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do moissanite earrings tarnish?

The stones never do. Sterling silver posts and backs can tarnish, and plating can wear; solid 14K or 18K gold only rarely darkens, and platinum, titanium and 316L steel posts do not tarnish. Store them dry and wipe silver with a polishing cloth.

Is the green mark on my finger harmful?

No. A Nebraska Medicine dermatologist says the green residue from copper is not harmful and washes off with soap and water. An itchy or red rash is a different thing, often a metal allergy, so show that to a doctor.

How can I stop a ring turning my finger green?

Keep it dry: take it off to wash your hands, shower and exercise, and put it on after lotion. A thin coat of clear nail varnish on the inside of the band blocks contact for a while but needs reapplying, and a worn plated ring can be re-plated. For a lasting fix, choose solid gold, platinum, 316L steel or titanium.

Can you shower with a moissanite ring?

The stone, yes: water and soap do not harm it. Solid gold and platinum are fine; sterling silver tarnishes faster and plating wears faster with daily soap and water.
