Is moissanite pawnable? Does moissanite hold its value?
Moissanite is pawnable only in the sense that its setting is: it barely holds its value, because pawn shops and buyers pay for the gold or platinum in the setting, not the moissanite. Other makers have entered the market since the original patents expired, and the original maker reports downward pricing pressure. A sterling silver ring is worth its silver. Buy moissanite to wear, not to resell.
Is moissanite pawnable?
A pawn is a loan against the item. Florida law, for example, defines a pawn as an advance of money on the security of goods left with the pawnbroker. Goods not redeemed within 30 days after the loan’s maturity date are automatically forfeited to the pawnbroker. So a pawn shop’s offer depends on what it could recover by selling the piece if you do not come back. The metal has a market price; the stone does not. Gold, platinum and silver are priced every day, and a buyer can weigh and test them. A used moissanite has to compete with new ones: Charles & Colvard, which calls itself the original source of created moissanite, said in its annual report for the year to June 2024 that new providers have entered since its patents expired, that lower-grade moissanite is reaching the market “at competitive price points”, and that it has been “experiencing downward pricing pressures”. So expect any offer on a moissanite ring to be based on its gold, platinum or silver. We found no published survey of what pawn shops pay for moissanite, so treat figures you see online as anecdote.
Does moissanite hold its value?
No. Moissanite is a manufactured stone, and other makers have been free to grow it since the original patents ran out: Charles & Colvard says its US product and method patents expired in 2015 and most of its foreign patents in 2016, the last one, in Mexico, in 2021 (more in why is moissanite so cheap?). While new stones face downward price pressure, a used one cannot hold the price you paid. Lab-grown diamond is in the same position; see do lab-grown diamonds have resale value? Does moissanite have any value at all? Yes, as a stone to wear. GIA reported a hardness of 9¼ on the scale, so the stone itself is hard to scratch in daily wear. Its value is in wearing it, not in selling it on.
What is the metal in a moissanite ring worth?
| Stamp or description | What it means | Precious metal in each gram | What a buyer pays for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10K or 417 | 10 parts gold in 24 | About 0.417 g of gold | The gold |
| 14K, 585 or 583 | 14 parts gold mixed with 10 parts of other metals (FTC); GIA notes it may be stamped 585 or 583 | About 0.583 g of gold | The gold |
| 18K or 750 | 18 parts gold in 24 | 0.75 g of gold | The gold |
| Platinum | The FTC says an item called platinum without qualification should be at least 95% platinum; 850 Plat. means 85% | At least 0.95 g of platinum if marked plain platinum; 0.85 g if marked 850 Plat. | The platinum |
| Sterling, silver or 925 | 92.5% pure silver (FTC) | 0.925 g of silver | The silver |
| Gold vermeil | Sterling silver coated or plated with gold (FTC) | Mostly silver | The silver; the gold layer is thin |
| Gold plated, over brass or steel | A surface layer of gold; under the FTC guides, gold electroplate can be as thin as the equivalent of 0.175 microns of fine gold | Very little | Little or nothing |
| The moissanite | A metric carat is 0.2 g (NIST) | None | Not part of a metal price |
How do you work out the metal value yourself?
1. Weigh it on a scale that reads to 0.01 g. 2. Take off the stones: a metric carat is 0.2 grams, so a 1 carat moissanite adds only 0.2 g to the scale. 3. Multiply by the purity from the table: a ring with 3 grams of 14K gold holds 3 × 0.583, about 1.75 grams of pure gold. 4. Multiply by today’s price per gram. Metal prices are quoted per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams, so divide the ounce price by 31.1035. Our gold, platinum and silver pages show today’s prices. If a buyer quotes per pennyweight (dwt), one pennyweight is 1.555 grams. Treat the result as a ceiling. A buyer who melts the piece needs a margin, so the offer will be lower; ask more than one buyer. First check that the gold is solid: see how to tell if gold is real.
What should you buy if resale matters to you?
Buy moissanite to wear, not to resell. If you want part of the price to come back one day, the part with a market price is the metal: a solid 14K or 18K gold or platinum setting holds real metal, while a sterling silver ring, a fine way to wear moissanite cheaply, will only ever fetch its silver. On gold, look for the karat mark and, next to it, the name or US registered trademark of the company that stands behind it; the FTC says that if a gold piece has the karat mark but no trademark, don’t buy it. Do not count on a GRA card to add resale value: it is not a GIA or IGI report (see is a GRA certificate real?). Keep the receipt and the metal details from the listing, so you know what you are selling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you pawn a moissanite ring?
Yes, if the shop will take it. The offer depends on what the shop could sell the ring for, which for moissanite is mainly its gold, platinum or silver. If you do not repay, the shop keeps the ring: under Florida law, for example, goods not redeemed within 30 days after the loan’s maturity date are automatically forfeited to the pawnbroker. Rules vary by state.
Will a pawn shop think my moissanite is a diamond?
It should not, if it checks properly. GIA reported in 1997 that thermal diamond testers react to moissanite as if it were diamond, and that C3 Inc. had produced a separate instrument solely to tell the two apart. Moissanite also shows doubled facet edges under a loupe, which diamond does not. See does moissanite pass a diamond tester?
Is a sterling silver moissanite ring worth anything?
Its silver. Sterling is 92.5% silver, so weigh the ring, take off the stones, multiply by 0.925 and then by today’s silver price per gram from our silver page. Gold plating on top adds little: under the FTC guides, gold electroplate can be as thin as the equivalent of 0.175 microns of fine gold.
Is moissanite an investment?
No. The stone is manufactured, new providers have entered since the original patents expired, and the original maker reports downward pricing pressure. The only part of a moissanite ring with a daily market price is the metal.
