Look for listings that say "lab created", "synthetic" or "created" ruby, or "red corundum", and pick the size in millimetres: a 10 mm round is roughly 4 to 5 carats. Skip any cheap listing that calls a large ruby "natural", "unheated" or "certified".

Is a lab ruby a real ruby?
Yes. It is corundum coloured by chromium, the same as a mined ruby, with the same hardness (Mohs 9). It has to be sold as lab-created or synthetic, which is why the honest listings say so.
How many carats is a 10 mm ruby?

Do lab rubies glow under UV light?
Many do, strongly: chromium makes ruby fluoresce red under ultraviolet, and flame-fusion lab rubies usually glow brightly. Some mined rubies do too, so a glow proves it is ruby-like, not whether it is lab-grown.
